PATINA five meeting dates for 2018 are:

January 21, 2018

There will be no fiddling around at the January meeting because the speaker is a renowned banjo maker. Kevin Enoch will show some of his stunning banjos, as well as some very interesting banjos in his collection. He will present slides showing the tools he uses to create extraordinary pearl inlay and the carving details in his custom banjos. If you want a sneak peak at some of his work, please see enochbanjos.com and click Custom on his Banjoís page. Kevin Enoch is from Cleveland, Ohio. His father and grandfather were carpenters. His first job was working under his fatherís tutelage whose motto was ďanything worth doing is worth doing right.Ē In the early 1980ís, Kevin started playing old-time banjo and hanging out at Goose Acres Music, which was the center of Clevelandís old-time music scene at the time. After helping with carpentry work at the shop, the owner offered to let him first learn to build an instrument after hours and later hired him to do instrument building, starting with autoharps and lap dulcimer. Within a few years, he was their lead banjo builder. He obtained a Ohio Arts Council grant to study pearl inlay and engraving from master instrument builder and Ohio State University fine arts teacher, Doug Unger. In 1989, he left Ohio and started building instruments under his own name. In 1991 Kevin started the company Enoch Instruments; the goal was to create an instrument designed for clawhammer playing, embracing the aesthetics of the great banjo makers of the early 20th century. His ability to create high quality pearl inlays has been recognized by players and collectors alike. Kevin was awarded a Maryland Arts Council grant in 2009 to teach pearl engraving to Pete Ross. He also has done work for other companies including Paul Reed Smith Guitars and C. F. Martin Guitars. If itís too cold to come out for the tailgating, please come around noon to catch this program, and bring two friends. The American Legion Post 270 located at 1355 Balls Hill Road, McLean, VA Tool Trading: about 9:00 -11:15 AM, Mini-Auction 11:15-12:00. Program 12:00-1:30 pm. Speaking of cold weather, we have rarely cancelled a meeting but it would be safe for our members and visitors if we announce this cancellation plan. Although we meet on Sunday, Fairfax County Schools does have Sunday events and announces cancellations due to weather. PATINA will follow Fairfax County Cancellation notices! I would like to thank the members who shared their interests and well-honed skills at our last meeting. The presentations and exhibits were very informative. The feedback from all attendees was outstanding so we will do it again! Finally, see patinatools.org for announcements and information regarding the 2018 Spring Dealer Sale and Auction to be held on March 10, 2018 in Damascus MD.
